Recently I undertook my next level of coaching certification, IECL Level 2, and a couple of areas really elevated their importance for me in enhancing my coaching craft. I thought I’d share these over coming days as tips that may help your own coaching or conversations.
The first area is perspective-taking which helps clients consider different angles in solving their problems. The first step in this process is opening up the client’s world through the right questions, helping them appreciate their challenges from various perspectives.
This may include thinking about the situation from a friend, a peer, a competitor or an entirely different role. It can also be about reflecting on one’s own mindset, the client’s own perspectives, when dealing with a situation. These discussions can lead to new ways of understanding the issue. One technique we used was to guide a coachee/counterpart to experience the issue from two perspectives. The power of this was enhanced by taking two different physical positions – being seated in two seats opposite each other. It brings a tangible element to the coaching conversation, helping clients to physically and mentally shift their viewpoints.
