As a leader and consultant to many different clients, something I have known for a long time is the profound impact of first impressions in the workplace. In fact I used to lead a team at Australia Post, and one of our varied responsibilities was to create awesome onboarding experiences for new starters. Crafting an exceptional onboarding experience for new employees is more than a procedure; it’s the first step in building a lasting relationship.
Onboarding is not just about paperwork and processes. It’s about making each new team member feel welcomed, valued, and prepared. An exceptional onboarding process is person-centred, aiming not only to inform but also to inspire and integrate new hires into the company culture seamlessly.
It seems so straight forward to get the fundamentals right, but so often they are not. Here are some thought starters:
- Preparation Before Day One
– Engaging with the New Starter Before Day One
- A Warm Welcome
– Structured Learning Path
– Buddy up
This doesn’t have to be cumbersome and only the domain of big corporates. Many of my smaller clients have put in some efficient processes, and involved several team members which goes a long way to integrating the new starter and quickly making them part of the fabric of the organisation.
The importance of getting this right cannot be overstated. A thoughtful onboarding process sets the stage for employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention. Each step is an opportunity to affirm the organisation’s values and the role each employee plays in our larger mission. And what’s more, the quicker they are onboarded, the quicker they are performing at agreed expectations and everyone is happy.
But onboarding is only one part of a puzzle with many pieces. If you are leader who is currently battling challenges around significant growth, change or chaos, then I’d be very happy to grab a coffee to help you get clarity around these. Simply book in a call here
