Just over 18 months ago I had decided to start a business and I was at home with lots of butcher’s paper on the walls deciding on a name for it. My wife, kids and friends were challenging me on each one and the relevance to my business. As have many others. So why Beacon Consult.?
Why Beacon?
We reside in Port Melbourne, an inner city suburb of Melbourne Australia. For over a century Port Melbourne has been a gateway for immigrants and visitors arriving by boat. One of the area’s iconic beacons can be seen from our home, a guide to so many for so long. Our country has been built on this immigration, and think of all the steps taken by new arrivals to discover happiness and meet the very lofty goal of a new life. In the same way I want to guide clients to their future, along a crafted path, to fulfil their own biggest dreams.
And Consult?
My wife is a marketer. For one thing she said ‘Consulting’ was too boring. But Consult is more specific. It talks to the power of connection, of having meaningful conversations, of listening with intent to understand the real and unique challenges a client has and provide the best advice possible. At a time when people and organisations have been losing trust in big consultancies, maybe we need to revert to core consulting behaviours. I have worked 10 years in management consulting (PwC, EY, BearingPoint) but a bigger portion of my career has been working in multiple industries in ‘the real world’. I believe this breadth makes me a much better consultant and a much better problem solver for my clients.
And the full stop?
Signifying all good conversations not only need intent, but a conclusion, and perhaps actions indicating some type of progress or change. Plus it is a piece of marketing magic. Apparently.
So that’s it. No made-up words. No AI-generated names. It’s as simple as it sounds.
