Apparently everywhere.
I recently read “Taming Toxic People: The Science of Identifying and Dealing with Psychopaths at Work and at Home” by David Gillespie which offers a practical guide to recognizing and managing psychopaths in both professional and personal settings. What a fun read! Gillespie defines psychopathy as a personality disorder marked by an absence of empathy, remorse, and guilt, alongside superficial charm and manipulativeness. Sounds wonderful! He clarifies that psychopaths can be found not only in criminal contexts but also in everyday life, including workplaces and homes.
Never have I read a book with the word ‘psychopath’ repeated so often. And I’m a Stephen King lover!!
The book outlines key traits and behaviours that help identify psychopaths, such as their propensity to lie, charm, and manipulate others for personal gain. And the frightening thing is that the data says the instance of psychopaths in senior leadership roles is increasing. Gillespie emphasises the need for awareness, as their charismatic and confident exterior often masks their true nature, which can be mistaken for leadership qualities.
Isn’t that comforting – psychopathic tendencies masquerading as leadership qualities! I’m sure we all have stories. Some strategies for dealing with them include maintaining emotional distance and setting firm boundaries to avoid their manipulative tactics.
It’s a great read. Also look out for Gillespie’s brand new book Toxic at Work.
What wisdom, tips & tricks, can you share that can help us all deal with the growing number of psychopaths in the workplace?
